18 Juli 2015 | Tanzania, Chukwani

Saturday fun-day! The procedure of writing this blog (from last Saturday) had some delay due to the fact that we left Chukwani (our hometown) for a one-night stay at the northern tip of the Island, Nungwi and Kendwa.

We left the house at 6:45 in order to be on time for the boat trip from Nungwi. After arrival in Nungwi, three of our group members (Feroz, Stijn and Vicky) got a Scuba Dive refresher for their safety. During their refresher, the rest of the group enjoyed some coffee, mainly girls, while the remaining guys feasted on a delicious breakfast.

After an hour or so we jumped fully equipped on a traditional Zanzibari boat. Sadly, today was the first cloudy day in the two weeks that we had been on Zanzibar. Apparently, the sun shines less in the northern parts of the island. The boat trip headed to Mnemba Island, which is situated at the east coast of Zanzibar. It is surrounded by coral reefs and therefore one of the main hotspots for diving and snorkelling here. The amazing boat trip took about two hours and the presence of some dolphins nearby already made it an experience to remember.

The whole group enjoyed the two dives and snorkel sessions as the waters were filled with fish, starfish, and coral as promised. However, the greatest experience for everyone was yet to come. On the way back to Nungwi, in the first sunny hour of the day, a massive humpback whale (might have been a relatively small one, but we could not tell) showed its strength and the true beauty of nature by jumping out of the water a couple times in our sight just in front of the Mnemba Island. This was a truly amazing experience, and an impressive end to a fantastic (but cloudy) day. Our guide told us we were very lucky; he has worked here for four years now and this was only the second time he experienced it.

The day was closed of by some drinks, and some more drinks, on the beach-party in our hotel that lasted till sunrise. However, not everyone managed to cross this finish line.
