Our second Thursday on the island started pretty cool. We had our breakfast as usual and most of the groups left for their research and their projects with the entrepreneurs, while others stayed at the volunteer house to work on their next steps.
Today was a special day for the group of Fiona, Sophie, and Michiel. Their day started pretty early as they as they had to leave at about 6 in the morning to visit a seaweed farm in a more remote part of Zanzibar and the drive took more than an hour. When they came back, they talked to us about their experience. So far, it was the most “shocking” project of any of the research groups. Women who couldn’t swim had to struggle every day for producing and farming seaweed. Those farmers do not know how to swim, and due to that and the lack of capital, they have to lend a boat every day that costs them 5.000 shillings. To put everything into a context, the seaweed that is produced is being sold for 700 shillings per kilogram, which is less than 50 Euro cents!
The groups that are involved with school continued their work on the school and tourist project and later in that evening the idea was presented to Philemoni, who is the responsible person of Khaya organization.
The day ended relaxing at the beach near the house and with some drinks at the bar.
