Jambo (Hello there, how are you? ~ Swalili)

Even here in Zanzibar, we have a kind of routine during the week. Monday till Thursday are research days, on which we have meetings with the entrepreneurs, analyse their problems and discuss possible solutions with our teams. On Fridays we help for instance a school, as this is our volunteering day. The weekend though is to relax and explore all the beautiful things Zanzibar has to offer. Our home is in Chukwani, a neighborhood that is situated just 20 minutes south of Stone Town, which is in west Zanzibar. Since we went on the spice and cooking tour on Saturday, Sunday was the day to explore the beach on the east side of Zanzibar.

After a drive of about one and a half hour (the driver was a little bit slow) we arrived and lets call this place for convenience “heaven”, or if you like it more, “paradise”. Although most of the students of our group travelled a lot, I think no one ever saw such a deep blue ocean combined with a true virgin white sand beach. The horizon from left to right was the same, except for a big rock in the sea. And guess what, someone build on exactly that rock a restaurant and we made a reservation to have dinner there in the evening (See the pictures for some visualization)!

We spent the day in a very relaxed way: lying on the beach and enjoying the sun, swimming in the sea and playing some ball games and reading some books. After a while, we found out that there was a real nice beach bar behind us. Here we could refresh with drinks and a small lunch, but most of all enjoy the infinity pool and listen to the nice and relaxing music. At about 6 in the afternoon, we walked to the Rock restaurant and had a good dinner. This place to have dinner was truly unique, so now we understand that literally all the first hits (either images or websites) after Googling “restaurant Zanzibar” are about this Rock Restaurant.

After dinner, everyone was tired after a busy week full of travelling, meeting new peoples, and experiencing new surroundings. Coming week we will continue with the research for our projects and do volunteering work on Friday again. Moreover, we found out that another Dutch group of students arrived on Zanzibar for charity work so we will probably meet them this week as well. We are very excited about next week and hope we can make a difference for the entrepreneurs over here!
